MONDAY11.17.2008
DCPS Standard(s):6M6 Identify, measure, describe, classify, and construct various angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals; measure the interior angles of various polygons.
WARM UP (BCR):Which kind of polygons appear:
- in your classrooms
- your school
- places outside your school
Name 6 things and their shapes.
Connected Mathematics Shapes & Designs p2.
OBJECTIVE:Define and draw the symmetries of different shapes.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:In what ways do different combinations of side and angles give different shapes (symmetries)?
PRODUCT:Drawings of symmetrical shapes in the environment.
Guided Instruction & Independent Practice/Study
WHOLE GROUP DISCUSSION:Discuss and show pictures of geometry in real life situations: http://www.nebo.edu/misc/learning_resources/ppt/6-12/geometry.ppt
In geometry, symmetry has to do with how “balanced” or “even” an object looks. Show examples of these objects in the classroom.
A plane figure has symmetry if you can trace it on a piece of paper move it to a different position and have it match up with the original figure exactly. Show this ppt: http://www.muskingum.edu/~rdaquila/m120/m120cn9-4.ppt#2
SMALL GROUP:
-Break the class into 3 groups.
-Ask students to cut and paste 5 different shapes showing symmetries. Name objects of these shapes.
- Ask the leader/ reporter to share their work with the class.
Closure of Lesson
Online game:
Complete the designs by arranging geometric shapes provided:

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY11.18-19.2008
DCPS Standard(s):6M6 Identify, measure, describe, classify, and construct various angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals; measure the interior angles of various polygons.
WARM UP (BCR):
- TUESDAY: Draw a trapezoid that is made up of 2 triangles.
- WEDNESDAY:
Make 3 shapes that are:
- identical in color
- different in size- facing in different directions.
OBJECTIVE:Explain the 2nd advisory project and start it up by creating a “shapes section” in the students’ notebooks.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:What do you know about shapes and designs?
PRODUCT:“Shapes section” in the notebook to start the 2nd advisory project.
Connected Mathematics Shapes & Designs p5.
Guided Instruction & Independent Practice/Study
WHOLE GROUP DISCUSSION:As you work in this unit, you will be asked to think about the characteristics of different shapes and how unusual a shape can be and still be a triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, or hexagon. You will also be asked to think about the relationships among these shapes. It is these characteristics of shapes and the relationships among them that affect the designs you see in your world.
One of the ways you will be asked to demonstrate what sense you are making of the mathematics in this unit is through a final project. At the end of this unit you will use everything you have learned to create a project such as a book, a poster, a report, a mobile, or a slide show.
SMALL GROUP:
- Break the class into three groups.
- They can start preparing for their project now. Create a special “shapes section” in your notebook, where you can collect information about:
- the characteristics of the shapes: triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, octagons
- the relationships among the shapes listed above
- Examples of places where these shapes can be found in your world.
Connected Mathematics Shapes & Designs p7.
Closure of Lesson
TUESDAY
Online game: Select tiles that will fit in the original figure. Not all tiles will be needed: http://schooltimegames.com/Mathematics/MP_BuildingBlocks.html
WEDNESDAY:
Online game: Drag the 2D tiles to the shape’s outline. Try to fill the space as quickly as possible: http://schooltimegames.com/Mathematics/MP_ShapeInlay.html
THURSDAY11.20.2008
DCPS Standard(s):6M6 Identify, measure, describe, classify, and construct various angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals; measure the interior angles of various polygons.
WARM UP (BCR):Compare and contrast a pentagon and a star. How are they the same? How are they different? Use a Venn Diagram.
Connected Mathematics Shapes & Designs p22.
OBJECTIVE:Explain and model how to use a protractor and an angle ruler.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:How do we measure the angles of a triangle?
PRODUCT:Completed sequencing chart on how to use a protractor to measure an angle.
Connected Mathematics Shapes & Designs p31.
Guided Instruction & Independent Practice/Study
WHOLE GROUP DISCUSSION:Show this PowerPoint presentation on how to measure, calculate, and draw an angle: http://jc-schools.net/PPT/Protractor-usage.ppt
SMALL GROUP:Break the class into 3 groups. Recall the steps on how to measure, calculate, and draw an angle shown on the ppt. Ask students to complete a sequencing chart.
Closure of Lesson Online game:
Practice estimating angles with this fun geometry game: http://www.mathplayground.com/alienangles.html
FRIDAY11.21.2008
DCPS Standard(s):6M6 Identify, measure, describe, classify, and construct various angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals; measure the interior angles of various polygons.
WARM UP (BCR):Draw an angle, name the parts. Draw a right triangle, name the parts.
OBJECTIVE:Draw angles and triangles using a protractor or an angle ruler.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:How do you describe the size of an angle?
PRODUCT:Drawing of angles and triangles of different measurements.
Guided Instruction & Independent Practice/Study
WHOLE GROUP DISCUSSION:Discuss Angles and their Measurements, show this ppt presentation: http://webtech.cherokee.k12.ga.us/sequoyah-hs/math/1.4%20Angles%20&%20their%20measures.ppt
SMALL GROUP:Break the class into 3 groups. On a poster paper, ask them to make sketches of angles with approximately the given measure on page 26 Investigation 3: Polygons and Angles Connected Mathematics. For each sketch, include an arrow indicating the angle turn.

WELCOME SY 2014-2015!
Teachers & parents tell me that this blog is like a "One-Stop-Shop", here's why ---
There are tons of lesson plans, printables, activity sheets and other resources that special education teachers can find in this blog! It's all for you to get the lil ones engaged in their seats and lovin' what they're doin'!
This blog is also our class portal to communicate information about our class, to archive course materials, to publish the course curriculum, syllabus, class rules, lessons, homework assignments, rubrics, and presentations. Yes, everything is in this blog for our students to review our lessons at home!
Parents love the transparency and the ability to access class materials in this blog. It's easy for parents to follow along as my students post their work. This holds true for their psychologists, social workers, general education teachers, and other special ed providers. This is another way for us to collaborate with the Multi-Disciplinary Team members of our students!
This class blog also serves as our students' e-portfolio. Our students collect the work they want to consider highlighting and then publish those that represent their best work. They then reflect on their work as they share them to their parents and teachers for positive comments and feedback. It's very easy for them to look back over their work and see the growth they've accomplished!
We invite you to please leave a message to our students. Beside the tiny envelope just after each entry is the comments link. Your positive feedback will surely encourage our students to do their best in school.
Thank you for visiting our class portal!
