Happy New Year, everyone! I thought some of you might be interested in teaching your expertise or sharing them with students who are interested to be good at what you do. Just found this one...

Learnivore.com is a marketplace to connect students with private instructors in the arts, athletics, and academics by creating a free profile (for both students and instructors). The site just launched, and I'm trying to encourage as many high quality instructors to join as possible. I believe that some of you, with your years of experience, qualify as highly qualified instructors. Once again, it is 100% FREE. I am also using Learnivore and you can get an idea about what I do by looking at my instructor profile here. You can create your own profile and spread your expertise as well, here's the link: https://learnivore.com/instructors/new/instruction.

Right now we're focused on building a community and making it as big as possible, so that educator extraordinaires (like you) have a great place to let people know your expertise and potential students of all ages have a place to find people who teach them.

You can post multiple profiles, one for every discipline you are good at and are willing to each. So if someone teaches both fitness and academics, or photography and athletics they could post two profiles or more. Also, you can differentiate yourself by price, skills, education, and more. Creating a profile is very fast, easy, and convenient! It involves 4 pages that take about 5 minutes total to complete. When you create a profile you get to reflect on why it is you love teaching your particular field of interest. You can also post documents, photos, videos, and audio files to enhance your profiles.

I firmly believe that this would be a great opportunity for you to spread your expertise the 21st Century way! Please let me know if you have any questions.

All the best,

This is what I truly love about summer vacations, it allows us teachers to catch up with technology tools and learn how to integrate them in the classroom. I just joined Instagram last week after a friend of mine encouraged me to try it out and post my vacation photos there. You guessed it right! I was uploading, was trying different kinds of editing tools to enhance my photos, and learning all of these cool features in just a matter of minutes. I immediately saw the artistic use of Instagram, and knowing that many of my middle school students are using this app on their phones my ideas on how to use this in the classroom went wild!

How can we incorporate Instagram in the classroom? Education Rethink suggests Ten Ideas for using Instagram in the Classroom.

1. Digital Storytelling: I started
doing Show and Tell awhile ago, after Tom suggested that it could be a powerful
way for students to share their stories. I'm going to do that this year.
However, I'm also going to give students the option of taking pictures from
their neighborhood. They can tell their story visually, annotating it through
their comments on each picture.

2. Grammar Practice: Photography can be a great place to practice
grammatical structures. It can be something as simple as writing a functional
text (I had been walking down the street when I saw . . .) Or it could be a way
to practice, sequentially, the grammatical structure using their world as the
context.

3. Photojournalism:
Similar to digital storytelling, this would allow students to explore issues in
their world through a visual medium. I want them to engage in citizen
journalism. Whether it's a school sporting event or an immigration sweep, a
classroom community service activity or a local election, students can use the
mobile devices to express their social voice.

4. Photo Prompts: Last year, I found
photographs and created writing prompts. Sometimes, they were geared toward
poetry or narrative while other times they were persuasive or informational. I
will encourage students to develop their own photo prompts using Instagram.

5. Metaphors: I will give students
concepts from any of the subject areas and ask students to find a metaphor that
fits the concept. They will use Instagram to find the metaphor and then describe
it in the comments section.

6. Photos for Blogs:
This is pretty simple, but I
want students to start adding their own photographs to some of their blog posts.
There's something powerful about looking at a post and realizing that the
photograph and the writing both originated from the same author.

7. Find the Context: I want my
students to document math that they see in their world. I'm thinking Instagram
can be a great place to document things like linear relationships, data,
fractions, etc.

8. Ethnographic Study: I've done this
before in social studies in writing. I'm thinking it might work as a blended
activity of writing and pictures. I'd love to see them take photographs of the
spaces they inhabit and then analyze the cultural, political, social and
economic elements that define the space.

9. Sharing Art: I love to sketch. I
love to doodle. And yet, I've rarely posted my drawings to Instagram. I'm
wondering what it would look like to blend the art of photography with pencil
and paper or with painting.

10.Just Let Them Take Pictures: I'm
thinking of letting kids take pictures for the sake of taking pictures. Let a
few of them fall in love with photography. Let them find the beauty in their
world and share it with others and then see what kind of conversations occur
afterward.

Can you add some more ideas in this list?

Easy with our writing strategy! Students will definitely enjoy writing this Easter with full-color photos and reflective Easter quotes. This activity will help them write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Students will definitely love this fantastic constructed response writing practice which uses the RACE stategy to develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples.

Modifications for exceptional needs students in a self-contained or inclusive setting:
- Enlarged text
- Modified (shortened/simplified) text
- Graphic organizer
- Bolded/highlighted key words

Enjoy!

Special Education IEP Snapshot. Do you share the IEP goals and accomodations with general education teachers? Here is a form that you can use to help you inform the regular education teacher(s) of those students in the regular education classroom who have IEP’s and may need adaptations.

Make your inputs in this IEP At-A-Glance Form brief but include enough information to assure that the IEP is being followed. This is an editable word document that you can modify based from the needs of your student. You may copy the goals and adaptations from the IEP and staple it to this if you wish. You may hand carry it to the regular education teacher and explain to her the purpose of this document.

When I share this document with a regular education teacher, I explain to him/ her that:

- this is a confidential document. This is not to be left in the desk; it must be kept in a safe, confidential location.
- if he/ she needs more information to get in touch with me.
- it is very important that IEP’s are followed for every student who has one.
Yes, we made it to Scholastic Top 20 Teacher Blogs! It's all because of you, many thanks for everything! We are #7 (see our URL?)...click the image to enlarge. Here are the rest of our awesome and inspiring bloggers who made it to Scholastic Top 20:

1. Best for Hands-on Activities
Mrs. Cassidy’s Classroom Blog
The Lowdown: Canadian first-grade teacher Kathy Cassidy invites readers into the classroom to interact with students and her dynamic lessons.
Why We Love It: Besides sharing fun ideas like making fairy-tale characters out of clay, Cassidy lets us witness her students’ learning firsthand by posting lots of videos and photographs. And another bonus: We get to learn from Cassidy’s many guest speakers, too!
Why She Loves Blogging: “My favorite thing about blogging,” says Cassidy, “is that the students literally have a worldwide audience. They see themselves as writers because people can and do read and comment on their work.”

2. Best News From the Trenches
Teach for Us
The Lowdown: Teach for America teachers share the ins and outs of the sometimes controversial program.
Why We Love It: Whether you want TFA dirt (like how tough the boot-camp training really is) or warm fuzzies (like one blogger’s quest to get her student to love books by reading with her nightly over the phone), you’ll find the goods in this collection of blogs from TFA corps members working all over the country.

3. Best Student Teacher Blog
Docere Est Discere
The Lowdown: Galen “Mr. B.” Broaddus discusses his journey toward becoming a teacher.
Why We Love It: From tips for up-and-coming student teachers to his own reflections on his process, Mr. B. reminds us how far we have come. Perfect for those days when we’re feeling just a bit jaded.
Why He Loves Blogging: Broaddus enjoys the feedback. “Knowing that there are other teachers (or teacher candidates) out there who are working the front lines and having the same concerns that I have had is comforting, and we work through them together,” he says.

4. Best for Art Teachers (or Other Happy Finger-Painters!)
The Teaching Palette
The Lowdown: Teachers Hillary Andrlik and Theresa McGee cover useful resources (like the best iPhone apps for art teachers), classroom-management techniques, and art-worthy news.
Why We Love It: With arts programs always under threat, it’s nice to feel like there’s an online home for people who value the importance of watercolor and oil paints.
Why They Love Blogging: Both McGee and Andrlik enjoy the opportunity to connect with teachers nationally and internationally. Says McGee, “Art education has a unique set of challenges, and blogging has created an online forum to share ideas.” Adds Andrlik, “Our readers often give us new insight on a topic or provide a fresh perspective based on their unique experience.”

5. Best for Tech Wannabes Creating Lifelong Learners
Mr. Needleman.com
The Lowdown: Tech wiz Mathew Needleman provides quick tips on integrating tech into the classroom.
Why We Love It:: Needleman skips the jargon and explains how to incorporate iPhones in the classroom, clarifies podcast copyright laws, and discusses making digital movies, putting even the technologically challenged at ease.

6. Best Forward-Thinking Tech Blog
Integrating Tech
The Lowdown: Pennsylvania teacher Scott Snyder is always ahead of the technological curve.
Why We Love It: Who would have thought texting, Tweeting, and chat rooms made for good lessons? Snyder uses all of these, plus Skype and Chatzy, to conduct discussions in the classroom. You can also follow him on Twitter: @Thespian70.

7. Best Special-Ed Blog
Digital Anthology
The Lowdown: Award-winning special-education teacher Maria Angala posts daily lessons and classroom videos.
Why We Love It: There’s no hard-core pedagogy here—other than that determination can make all successful—but we get to see the kids’ creativity at work. And if you want something more theory-based, Angala keeps another blog at teachersol.blogspot.com.
Why She Loves Blogging: Says Angala, “Our social workers read the blog to understand my students’ inner feelings.”

8. Best for Super Science Ideas
ScienceFix
The Lowdown: Middle school science teacher Darren Fix entertains with science lessons and experiments.
Why We Love It: Watch his Mr. Wizard––style experiments—like using a jellyfish to learn genetic engineering.
Why He Loves Blogging: Says Fix, “Posting stimulates my creativity and leads to new ideas. It’s a positive experience in a profession that unfortunately dwells on the negative too much.”

9. Best Superintendent Straight Talk
The Principals Page
The Lowdown: Illinois superintendent Michael Smith chronicles his days.
Why We Love It: Smith’s blog discusses everything from Ferris Bueller to teaching conferences to a surefire way for President Obama to fix education.
Why He Loves Blogging: Says Smith, “It allows a small-town superintendent to be involved in national or worldwide discussions on education issues.”

10. Best for Kid Book Reviews
A Year of Reading
The Lowdown: Teachers Franki Sibberson and Mary Lee Hahn review new children’s books.
Why We Love It: The reviews are always teacher-focused, pinpointing possible readers as well as how a book might be used in the classroom.
Why They Love Blogging: Says Sibberson, “The writing helps
us stay current on books and with teaching.”
Don't you and your students love using foldables in the classroom?

I have them on my bulletin board and I model how to create them for my students, they love doing it and are taking ownership of it. Foldables are interactive, three dimensional, easy organizers and which are also great student generated projects for any subject. See what we have here in my classroom, you can ask your students to create some too!

I am always excited to get teacher followers and interact with them!

Twitter can help you create a professional
learning network, but it's important to focus on the quality of the educators
you follow, not the quantity, writes Tom Whitby, an adjunct professor at St.
Joseph's College in New York. Try separating your most useful contacts from the
main list of people you follow on Twitter, he suggests. "I have a list of what I
call my 'Stalwart List.' It is made up of all of the people I most frequently
get information from," he writes. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Education

One interesting and fun way to break down big ideas and concepts for our kids with special needs is to use word clouds. I will give you some more pointers on the many ways you can use this tool for our students.

Yesterday, using this lesson our class watched an interesting video about the role that the Statue of Liberty played on Immigration and read a differentiated informational text about the famous historical landmark. Before we started the day's lesson, we generated lots of talking points from the resulting word cloud about the Statue of Liberty during our Do Now. My engaged students made predictions about what we were going to discuss, and they identified themes and talking points about the lesson.

Word clouds are a fun way to give the students a preview of a passage, and to break down a large chunk of text. Try it in your classroom, you will be amazed!

Here's a few of the 108 Ways to Use Word Clouds in the Classroom from the 21st Century Educational Technology and Learning:

All Subjects

Put your lesson plan into a word cloud to create a word cloud of what you will be learning about. This could also be part of your entire course outline used at the beginning of a course.

Paste a reading from your text into a word cloud. You may wish to turn off common words.

Copy and paste a reading from the web into a word cloud. You may wish to turn off common words.

Put vocabulary words into a word cloud.

Use a word cloud to create a discussion either in class or posted on the web for a discussion forum. Try to create it so that a question of inquiry can be used.

Create a group word cloud of the entire class or sub groups in the class. This could be in reaction to a discussion, an idea, a reading, or video. Students work in groups to come up with 20-30 descriptive words and then make a word cloud. Using advanced tools they could rank them or color code them.

Each student creates a word cloud in reflection from a discussion, an idea, a reading, or video. Individual comes up with 20-30 descriptive words and then makes a word cloud. Using advanced tools they could rank them or color code them.

Entire class creates a word cloud in reaction to a topic. In order to capture student word have them digitally input them using the Web 2.0 tools Write with Me or Google Forms.

Have students create word clouds that generate understanding of a concept, standards or vocabulary word.

Illustrate classroom thoughts or views using a word cloud to survey students. Favorite university, pro team, singer, etc.

Hello colleagues,

I have worked this weekend to finish the lesson plans about immigration that our class is going to discuss this week. With this lesson, students recognize immigrants as positive role models who overcame adversities or social and economic obstacles while striving to utilize personal talents and abilities. Consequently, they will read a variety of grade level texts fluently with accuracy, appropriate pace, phrasing and expression. How are our exceptional students able to do this? I created 3 different levels of the text that they will be reading, and have scaffolded the lesson to make sure they learn the required skills. Here are the lessons:

It's true! Everyday it gets more challenging for us and for our students most especially when even our neediest students are expected to learn on grade level standards. I know that teachers everywhere are now looking for new resources of information and motivation. Sometimes, it comes in the form of a teaching blog, like FUNSHINE, filled with big ideas and sanity-saving differentiated resources for our diverse learners!

I promise to just be brief about our lesson this week, and as an immigrant myself I am very excited about these lessons. Check them out, and as always, please leave me a message!

<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">The frosty relay is one of my all-time favorite activities! The students love the competition and the creativity all rolled into one. We’re actually going to be using this activity this week as we come back from break. (Head over to my blog next week to see tons of awesome snowmen pics created by my kiddo!)

<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">For this activity, I usually set up groups of four. Each student is assigned a problem number (1, 2, 3, and 4). At the front of the room, set up a sheet of large construction paper, poster board, or something tangible they can draw on easily. I usually allow my students to create fun names for their team and I write the name at the top of each paper.

<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Also, you will want to make enough copies so that each student has one. Cut the paper in half so that you have each round separate. I usually lay them out on a table in order so that students can easily grab the next round once they are ready.

Love using Choice boards? Here's a FREEBIE that contains a variety of activities about the winter/ holidays. Students can choose one or several activities to complete as they learn a skill or develop a product. Choice boards can be edited (word document) so that you can tailor it based from your needs and of your students!

Okay, admit it. The winter holidays have some of the most fun and interesting words in the English language. You can hardly say them without a smile coming to your face. While in class we usually choose 3 activities in a row for spelling, I would encourage our students at home to do a “black out” for a reward!! I also included an easy grading rubric, have fun!!

Thank you for a super rating!
Students will enjoy this awesome 11-page pack which has a spelling list (#1) and a vocabulary choice board for differentiating instruction! It includes choices that reflect a range of interest and learning styles. This homework activity targets Common Core Standard: Use spelling patterns and generalizations (e.g., word families, position-based spellings, syllable patterns, ending rules, meaningful word parts) in writing words. This activity packet also guides students in the choice of activities so that they are challenged but not frustrated. And of course, it provides clear instructions in the use of choice boards!
