DAY 4
KEY CONCEPT: The student will be able to convert fractions to percent equivalents and to discuss the ways in which this application might be used on a job, and what kind of jobs requires this skill.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to convert decimal numbers to percent equivalents.
ACADEMIC SKILLS REINFORCED: Convert fractions to decimals and percents and use these representations in estimations, computations and applications.
MATERIALS: Student handout on Decimal to Percent Conversion; Check list for
Presentations; Liters of soda, bags of M&M’s.
MOTIVATION/OPENER: Offer Food - Ask students if they would like ½ cup of soda, or 50% of a can? ¾ bag of M & M’s or 75% of the bag. Be prepared to measure out and offer candy/sodas to students.
Preparation: Teacher shows the PPT of the Key Concept(s) on the board.
Teacher reviews components of decimal numbers and percent equivalents and what they represent. Question students on how they use decimal numbers in everyday life and have them explain what decimal and percentages represent. Discuss how decimals and fractions might be used in the work place.
PRESENTATION:
Teacher explains that today’s lesson will cover conversion of decimal numbers to percent equivalents. Using the example of the M & M bags, graphically display the relationship of fractions to decimals and the steps in conversion process.
Emphasize that today’s lesson is an introduction to more complex operations involving decimal conversion and that a complete understanding of these basic steps will greatly aid in their understanding of future classroom and operations on the job in their chosen career field.
APPLICATION: (Student Activities)
PAIR & SHARE:
Instructor to divide class into small groups and display their ability to accurately convert fractions to decimals and develop several examples of how decimals and percents are used in both everyday life (i.e. paying bills, computing loan interest rates, etc.) and in the workforce.
INDIVIDUAL WORK:
And, when students have completed the task, they are to be prepared to accurately complete the worksheet demonstrating the conversion process: decimals to fractions, and be able to use ability in estimations, computations and applications.
DAY 5

DAY 5
OBJECTIVES:
After the lesson, students will be able to:
- change fractions to decimals, to percents.
MATERIALS:
Changing Fractions to Decimals to Percents notes:
Changing Fractions to Decimals to Percents worksheet
METHODS & STRATEGIES:
WHOLE CLASS DISCUSSION: Teach the concept of changing fractions to decimals to percents to the class.
Converting Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
To change…
A fraction to a decimal:
Divide the denominator (the bottom part) into the numerator (the top part):
1/4 = 1 ÷ 4.00 = 0.25
A fraction to a percent:
Multiply the fraction by 100 and reduce it. Then, attach a percent sign.
1/4 x 100/1 = 100/4 = 25/1 = 25%
A decimal to a fraction:
Starting from the decimal point, count the decimal places. If there is one decimal place, put the number over 10 and reduce. If there are two places, put the number over 100 and reduce. If there are three places, put it over 1000 and reduce, and so on.
0.25 = 25/100 = 1/4
A decimal to a percent:
Move the decimal point two places to the right. Then, attach a percent sign.
0.25 = 25%
A percent to a decimal:
Move the decimal point two places to the left. Then, drop the percent sign.
25% = 0.25
A percent to a fraction:
Put the number over 100 and reduce. Then, drop the percent sign.
25% = 25/100 = 1/4
QUIZ: Math quiz on fraction.
INTERDISCIPLINARY CONNECTION:
- technology
- science
- music
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION:
- Teacher to observe students during their demonstration of converting fractions to decimals and percents; and then being able to use these conversions in estimations, computations and applications and use these skills in everyday life and in the workforce.
- Students will formulate judgments about the ideas under discussion and support these judgments with convincing evidence and discuss within their group. Each group will present their findings. Student groups, who are observing the presenters, will use a “Checklist” and note the number of correct answers and the number of potential applications of converting fractions to decimals given by each presenting group. After the presentations, the observing groups will compile the information presented, and graph the results to present the validity of ideas as presented by each group.
- Students demonstrate and apply the concepts contained in the foundation and pathway standards through classroom application and displayed knowledge.
CLOSING:
Instructor selects several decimal to percent conversion examples created by students and have students demonstrate their examples to the rest of the class. Discuss the ways in which this mathematical application might be used on a job, and what kind of jobs might require this skill.
WEEKLY HOMEWORK:
Please submit these worksheets (#1, #2) on Friday you’re your parent’s signature.
